I had the opportunity to go out to the Salton Sea area with some bird photographers. As I’ve never been to this area before I thought it would be fun and an easy way to get my bearings out there. First, there weren’t a lot of birds to be seen or photographed, but I did manage to photograph some white pelicans and great egrets, so the weekend was not a complete loss - bird wise. What was amazing was the chance to visit, and photograph, Salvation Mountain and Slab City. Salvation Mountain has to be seen to be believed, and it’s all the work of one man. There’s a link below so more information. The Salton Sea area is on a decline - there’s some farming but not much else around the sea, and as the sea has no source of repleishment, other than rainfall, it’s a sea that may slowly die. (There is a high level of salinity which will ultimately affect both the fish and birds in the area.) It was a very interesting weekend, and I’m sure I’ll be heading out that way again.
