Having not been out of the country yet this year (2014), I decided I needed at least one international trip under my belt before December 31st. I looked around at the countries I haven't yet visited, gave myself a 10 to 12 day window to travel, and checked the American Airlines Route Map (One of my favorite websites). Lima was an easy flight from my home, so off I went. First overnight stop was Cusco, elevation approximately 11,200 feet. After wandering around Cusco for a few days I set off for Machu Picchi, one of the seven wonders of the world. Cusco was the site of the historic capital of the Inca Empire and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983 by UNESCO.
On my way to the village by Machu Picchu by car, we were fortunate to be in Peru for the Day of the Dead, or All Souls Day, a Catholic holiday celebrating departed family members - and it was amazing. We finally arrived in Aguas Calientes, gateway to Machu Picchi. You take a bus up to the visitor center for entry into the ruins. It really is a sight to behold, and a photographic wonderland. On a scale of 1 to 10, I’m giving this trip a strong 8½ to 9.
