Photographed at Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda, and borders the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is where Dian Fossey began her studies of the mountain gorillas in 1967, and she is widely credited with saving the gorillas from extinction by bringing their plight to the attention of the international community. As of November 2012, the estimated total number of mountain gorillas is around 880.
